Marmoset
Marmoset is the code submission server for computer science and engineering students at the University of Waterloo. It is a fork of the original Marmoset, which was created by the University of Maryland.
History
Marmoset started off as a plugin to the Eclipse IDE, created by then-PhD student Jaime Spacco under the direction of Bill Pugh in 2004 at the University of Maryland to solve the problem of TAs having to run all student-submitted code themselves.
In 2006, for Spacco's PhD thesis, this plugin was turned into a web-based app and was named after marmosets for unknown reasons.
Over the years, improvements were made by the UMD team, who later open-sourced Marmoset so other institutions could run their own instances. One of these institutions was the University of Waterloo, who still uses it to this day.
Trivia
- UMD just refers to Marmoset as the "submit server", rarely referencing "Marmoset", unlike Waterloo which exposes the name Marmoset all over the place.
- Some source distributions of Marmoset ship with custom themes for Vassar College and the University of Delaware. Waterloo never changed the default Marmoset color scheme so we're stuck with the default yellow and red hotdog stand theme.
- The default Marmoset color scheme seems to be based on the UMD's colors, which are in turn based on the flag of Maryland's colors. So in other words, Marmoset looks the way it does because the flag of Maryland does too.
- Marmoset is written mostly in Java. This explains a lot.
